It’s that time again!

Get Back to School and Back to Basics

Eat Well

  1. Eat breakfast - start the day with plenty of good fuel. Most of the MDIRSS schools now have a breakfast program. Get more information from your school.

  2. Eat a healthful lunch. Select healthy options from your school’s lunch menu, or pack a healthy lunch from home. Get tips on packing a healthful lunch.

  3. Have at least 5 servings of fruits or vegetables every day.

  4. Eat fresh - it tastes better and is more nutritious!

  5. Aim for zero sugar-sweetened beverages. Drink plenty of water and choose low-fat milk or 100% fruit juice.

Move Your Body

  1. Kids should be active for at least 60 minutes a day.

  2. Any activity in increments of 5-10 minutes throughout the day is beneficial.

  3. Regular activity helps kids feel less stressed, learn better, and sleep better.

  4. Limit kids’ tv, computer, and video time to no more than two hours per day. If kids spend less time sitting, they’ll spend more time moving.

  5. Inside or outside, just get moving!

Sleep Well

  1. Follow a bedtime routine - slow down, settle down, relax, and sleep.

  2. School-age kids need 10-12 hours of sleep each night. Teens should try to get 8-9 hours of sleep each night.

  3. Reduced stress = reduced illness.
